Sweet baby girl | St Albans newborn photographer

Newborn photographer, St. Albans, Hertfordshire

It is an honour to be invited into a family to observe and record their first days together, I try to portray the natural miracle and beauty of a new baby through my images, the connection between family members, and those fierce emotions that you can’t prepare yourself for … simple and beautiful.

To be invited back to meet a new addition is the greatest compliment, so I was thrilled when this beautiful baby girl came to my studio with her big brother in tow, a most handsome little fella, who I first met when he was a newborn a couple of years ago. It was wonderful to see how much he had grown and how well  he was fitting into his new role of big brother.

Print your photos | St Albans teen photographer

Teen photographer, St Albans, Hertfordshire

I am so passionate about printing photos that I offer a range of beautiful handselected products to make it easy for you. It is all very well having professional photos taken, but it is also important to invest in printing your images so you can see them to enjoy everyday. Without displaying your session in frames or creating albums, their is a danger that your beautiful photos will metaphorically gather dust on and USB or your hard drive!

This family had a very special story to tell, so each of their 3 children got their own handmade keepsake album individually tailored to each of them, along with a large print framed for the wall.

Why family portraits are so important | Teen family photographer

Teen family photographer, St Albans, Hertfordshire

Why do we need to be in photos? It is something many of us avoid, but people are precious, and the bonds we have with our loved ones are irreplaceable, without pictures our memories fade and the details we promise ourselves we will remember forever become blurred and forgotten.

This beautiful mum is the sister of a friend, she had always wanted to have family photos taken, but put it off as she wanted to lose a little weight first. One day everything changed, they received the crushing news that her husband had only a short time left. I went to their home 2 days later and took their photos in their garden. It wasn’t going to be possible to go to an exciting location with varied backgrounds, but that didn’t matter. I needed to capture the special relationships they had with each other as lasting memories. They were amazing, I have never witnessed such love, humour and support.

It’s a story that is hard to tell, but a story that highlights the importance of capturing your beautiful family on camera. We need to put aside our own insecurities and stop worrying about what we look like. Everyday we observe our own families, we see all their expressions from happy and joyful to sad and moody, everything that makes them the people who are so special to us. We don’t love someone less because their tummy is a bit soft, or their nose crinkles when they laugh, or their teeth are too wonky – in fact these unique characteristics make us love them more! It is easy to make excuses and to put it off, but you and your family are beautiful right now, don’t wait, life is too short.

Ringing the changes | Leeds family photographer

Leeds family photographer, West Yorkshire

The last year has seen some pretty incredible developments for this amazing, supportive family. About 8 months ago my cousin got in touch with me to talk about some changes that were going on in her little family. Her oldest child was brought into this world as a girl, but has always been a tomboy and favoured traditionally male sports and activities. After 12 years of struggling to understand her place in the world, she told her mother that she was transgender and wanted to be a boy.

Of course, this was a massive turning point not to be taken lightly. There were feelings of shock, anxiety, upset and relief to deal with. But after many hours of research to better understand and discovering the horrifying statistics about transgender teens who are not accepted, my cousin made a clear decision to support her new son Josh.

Since then there have been many developments from joining support networks, to finding mentors, dealing with school and talking to medical professionals. One of the changes that Josh requested to be made at home was to remove old photographs from the walls, so my cousin contacted me to organise a photoshoot at one of their favourite parks in Leeds.

After waiting all day for the rain to stop, we had a lovely evening together, laughing, joking and messing around. It was incredible to see the change in Josh, the sullen and withdrawn child had blossomed into a smiling, bright and outgoing boy. They are still at the start of a long journey, but I couldn’t be more impressed with their positivity and courage and I am proud to have been able to help them a small way along that road.

Beautiful frames and prints | St Albans family photographer

With the dad working abroad, this family booked a secret photo session with me to get some beautiful images to remind of his beautiful family back home in the UK. They chose a simple desk frame to hide in his suitcase when he was visiting just before his birthday, as well as some gorgeous art prints. It must have been a lovely surprise for him to discover the package when he arrived at his temporary home abroad. To see more images from this photoshoot click here.
