FAQs

Where did the name eskimo*rose come from?

This is the question I get asked more than any other! My name in Emma Collins, I’m happy with it, it suits me, but it isn’t particularly unique or memorable, in fact there are hundreds of Emma Collins’ around the world. So way back, when I started to have an online presence, I decided to call myself eskimo*rose, a throwback to some nicknames my family used to call me as a child … and I guess it kind of stuck and became my online alter ego.

Where are you based?

I am based in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. My session fees are based on photoshoots taking place within a 25mile radius, this includes North London, Harpenden, Redbourn, Berkhamsted, Tring, Aylesbury, Amersham, Rickmansworth, Hitchin, Bishop’s Stortford, Beaconsfield, and the surrounding areas. I am also available to travel nationally and internationally with additional travel and accommodation expenses.

How would you describe your style of photography?

Every family is unique, which is what makes photographing you so magical. I aim to show this in my imagery by looking for the little details, shared moments, authentic connections and natural expressions, all wrapped up in beautiful composition and light. The result is timeless, moody and evocative images that look like pieces of art, and also happen to be gorgeous portraits.

What is important to me is that you have fun and I capture you being you. If you’re looking for perfectly posed, styled images I may not be the photographer for you. Take a look at my galleries to get a better idea of my imagery.

FAMILY & MATERNITY SESSIONS

What do I need to do to prepare for our photoshoot?

I will send you a detailed ‘what to expect’ guide before your photoshoot. It explains everything you need to know about your session, from clothing tips to how to get the most out of your time with me. I will also speak to you in the lead up to your session to talk through our plans.

Where will our photoshoot take place?

We will work together to decide upon the perfect location for your session, whether it’s on location or in your home. You may have a location that is special to your family, if not I have lots of plenty of ideas up my sleeves.

What time of day do you schedule sessions?

I like to book sessions as early or as late as possible, to benefit from lovely glowing morning/afternoon light and long shadows, and avoiding harsh overhead sun. In the UK there is so much variation in daylight hours, but if you are lucky enough to book a session during spring or autumn we will be able to schedule your shoot at sunset or sunrise for the most beautiful light. We can book your session at whichever end of the day suits your family best.

What if it is raining on the day of our booking?

Unfortunately, living in the UK, rain is something that we have to take into consideration! On the day of your photoshoot I will make a decision as to the suitability of the conditions, if the weather is absolutely appalling then we can reschedule to another date at no extra cost.

But please remember it does not have to be clear blue sky for a successful photoshoot. Overcast weather provides the most flattering diffused light to create beautiful portraits. Crisp winter days have beautiful low light and long shadows, and I love all the layers and textures of clothing in the colder months.  Even light rain isn’t the end of the world, you can see in my galleries that I have had some super sessions in drizzly weather.

What if my kids don’t play ball during the session?

As parents this always the thing we worry about most whatever we are doing!  But please don’t be concerned, in a session with me the aim is to be relaxed and to have fun, just as you would on any other family outing. There is no unusual studio setting with hot bright lights, or the pressure of limited time slots. We will be running around in the fresh air or playing at home so your kids will feel at ease, and we have the freedom to extend the session a little should we need to pause for snacks, toilet breaks or tantrums!

Over the years I have photographed hundreds of children (including my own who are always the most challenging!) and met all sorts of different personalities, so I have lots of different tricks to get the best out of little ones, and the more self conscious older ones too. I will also speak to you before your photoshoot so that I can learn a bit more about what makes your children tick.

I really want pictures of my kids, but I’m worried my husband and I might spoil the photos!?

I totally understand where you are coming from, I’m just the same, I hate having my photo taken – why do you think I’m always behind a camera!! Your kids are going to look gorgeous, they are free-spirited, unselfconscious and a joy to shoot. But don’t let your own fears get in the way of you getting in the frame too. I can’t impress upon you enough, how important it is for you to be part of the story, you are such an important part of your family and your children’t lives. You may not be happy with the colour of your hair, the little extra weight that you are still carrying after having kids, the length of your legs or your laughter lines, but to your family you are perfect.

How long will the session last?

Generally sessions last between 1-2 hours, but I am mindful of younger children who can tire easily. There is no rush, so if one of your children needs a snack break that’s fine. I keep shooting until I get all the images that I need and that you will love.

How do I book?

You can contact me via my website, email me at emma@eskimorose-photography.com, or phone me on 07968 701934. Please note that sessions book up quickly, so get in touch as soon as possible.

NEWBORN SESSIONS

How old should my baby be for a newborn photoshoot?

All my newborns are photographed with in the first 6-10 days of their life. It is incredible how quickly a baby grows and changes during its first 2 weeks, so to get the most out of our session together and to achieve the type of images that you see in my portfolio, it is essential to photograph them in this window.

What do I need to do to prepare for our photoshoot?

I will send you a detailed ‘what to expect’ guide before your photoshoot. It explains everything you need to know about your session, from working around feeds to the flow of the session. I will also speak to you in the lead up to your session to talk through our plans.

How long will my newborn session take?

Newborn sessions are much longer than a family photoshoot, typically taking 3-4 hours. My aim is to make you feel relaxed so you can enjoy every moment of the experience. I always take as much time as we need, there is no rush, we wait for your baby to settle and let the session unfold naturally, following your baby’s lead, taking feeding breaks along the way.

Do you work in a studio?

Most people like to book a studio newborn session, which takes place in my home studio in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. The images you see in my gallery are reflective of this setting. However, if you prefer, I can also conduct a lifestyle newborn session in the comfort of your own home.

When do I need to book?

When it comes to newborns, we are working within a very small window of opportunity and a flexible time frame, so it is essential to reserve a date while you are still pregnant, to secure your booking. I typically book up months in advance, so please contact me asap to avoid disappointment.

AFTER YOUR SESSION

How will we see our gallery?

This is where the fun starts! About 2 weeks after your photoshoot I will call you to arrange a private viewing and ordering appointment. At the viewing you will see your gallery and we will chat over coffee (or maybe a sneaky glass of wine!), choose your favourite photos and discuss which products will work best for you and your home.

Do I have to decide in advance what products I want to order?

No, during your viewing session you decide which products and images you wish to purchase. Your session fee is payable in advance to confirm your booking, the rest is payable when you place your order at the viewing appointment. Most clients spend between £300-£800 on beautiful products after seeing their gallery.

However, before the photoshoot I will ask you where/how you are thinking of using your images as this will affect how I capture your family on the day of your session. I also recommend that you look through my product menu before your viewing session so that you have a good idea about what you are looking for.

I have no idea where to start with displaying my images on my walls, can you help?

Of course! I am with you throughout your viewing session to help you and lend you my professional expertise in choosing the right products and sizes for you and your home.

Can we buy digital files from you?

Yes. I consider digital files a premium product as it gives you complete freedom to print and enjoy on mobile devices. Individual files are available only alongside the purchase of other products for £50 each. The full set of print and web-ready digital files is available to buy at £900. I also offer collections that incorporate digital files and offer exceptional value.

When will we receive our products?

Your order will be ready for delivery or collection within 4-5 weeks of receipt of payment.
