The last year has seen some pretty incredible developments for this amazing, supportive family. About 8 months ago my cousin got in touch with me to talk about some changes that were going on in her little family. Her oldest child was brought into this world as a girl, but has always been a tomboy and favoured traditionally male sports and activities. After 12 years of struggling to understand her place in the world, she told her mother that she was transgender and wanted to be a boy.
Of course, this was a massive turning point not to be taken lightly. There were feelings of shock, anxiety, upset and relief to deal with. But after many hours of research to better understand and discovering the horrifying statistics about transgender teens who are not accepted, my cousin made a clear decision to support her new son Josh.
Since then there have been many developments from joining support networks, to finding mentors, dealing with school and talking to medical professionals. One of the changes that Josh requested to be made at home was to remove old photographs from the walls, so my cousin contacted me to organise a photoshoot at one of their favourite parks in Leeds.
After waiting all day for the rain to stop, we had a lovely evening together, laughing, joking and messing around. It was incredible to see the change in Josh, the sullen and withdrawn child had blossomed into a smiling, bright and outgoing boy. They are still at the start of a long journey, but I couldn’t be more impressed with their positivity and courage and I am proud to have been able to help them a small way along that road.
